LIVE AUDIENCE INTEGRATION

Role: Creative Director + Art Director, proposal phase

MTV approached VIVA Creative with a unique opportunity— how can we create a badass live virtual audience experience integrated into the 2020 Video Music Awards without the all too familiar Zoom fatigue and a variety of production limitations? 

For me the solution felt obvious— build people directly into the set into the windows of city buildings and brownstones. Hundreds of fans were brought into a virtual cityscape on an XR stage using Zoom. Video outputs of fans in stylized apartment interiors designed by VIVA were placed into virtual apartment buildings as part of the set using 25 computers and a high-grade video switch. To built excitement and to prepare for the event, fans were provided with how-to materials and videos. VIVA worked with a professional warmup talent to guide fans and keep them entertained and engaged throughout the process. Fans saw a live feed of the on-stage VMA performances and reacted in real time with applause, cheering and dancing.
